We’re delighted to welcome Heather Burns to the Tap team as an Advisor on the regulatory and political aspects of privacy.

Heather Burns is a tech policy and regulation specialist who focuses on researching, writing, publishing, consulting, and speaking extensively on digital regulations and political issues, most specifically those affecting web development. Heather’s mission is to educate digital professionals on the legal and political issues that impact their work, empower them to behave responsibly, and inspire them to view constructive political involvement as a cornerstone of professionalism.

Heather is also part of the core privacy team in WordPress.org, helping to create a suite of GDPR and privacy tools shipped in WordPress 4.9.6. Heather has also begun work on establishing a cross-CMS open source privacy coalition, and has created a policy monitoring blog to track the transposition of EU digital and tech regulations throughout the Brexit process.

Commenting on her new role, Heather says: “I’m delighted to be joining the Tap team at such an important time for innovation in privacy. As Brexit’s impact on Britain’s data protection framework draws closer, I’ll be supporting the team to stay on top of the changes ahead. I’m also looking forward to being a part of their participation in ICO’s regulatory sandbox to see what lessons in proactive co-regulation we can share from the experience.”

Tap CEO, Gilbert Hill adds: “Heather is a high-profile and prolific campaigner for privacy in the open source technology community, and we’re excited to have her on board to represent Tap in the active debates around policy, ethics and data.”

Stay tuned for our two part interview with Heather where we talk about all things privacy, her journey up to now, what it’s been like as a female privacy expert in the tech space and what the future may hold for privacy.
